Carville Blames Trump for Virginia Redistricting 'Fiasco' That Could Give Democrats 10-1 Congressional Edge

Democratic strategist James Carville blames Trump for starting a redistricting "arms race" after Virginia voters approved a referendum that could give Democrats a 10-1 congressional advantage. Both parties now engage in increasingly aggressive gerrymandering tactics that undermine fair representation.

Democratic Strategist Points Finger at Trump for Gerrymandering Arms Race

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville and his podcast co-host Al Hunt are laying the blame squarely at Donald Trump's feet for what they call a destructive redistricting "arms race" that has left both political parties looking cynical and power-hungry.

Virginia's Redistricting Victory Sparks Controversy

Democrats scored a significant victory Tuesday when Virginia voters narrowly approved a congressional redistricting referendum that could dramatically shift the balance of power in the state's congressional delegation. The ballot measure transfers redistricting authority from Virginia's current nonpartisan commission to the Democrat-controlled state legislature through the 2030 election.

The potential impact is staggering: Democrats could secure a 10-1 advantage in Virginia's congressional delegation, a massive jump from their current 6-5 edge. This redistricting could prove crucial in the battle for House majority control in the 2026 midterm elections.

"Trump Started This Whole Damn Fiasco"

Speaking on their "Politics War Room" podcast, Hunt didn't mince words about the origins of the current redistricting chaos. "This was all due to Donald Trump, who, desperate to avoid losing the House last year, demanded Republicans gerrymander in Texas and elsewhere and they were going to try to fix the elections," Hunt explained.

Hunt acknowledged the uncomfortable position Democrats found themselves in, calling the Virginia outcome "awful" even while admitting he would have supported it out of political necessity. "Virginia is a blue state, but it's not a 90% blue state," he noted, highlighting the disproportionate representation the new maps could create.

The Democratic strategist emphasized that Trump's aggressive redistricting push in Republican-controlled states left Democrats with little choice but to respond in kind. "What he didn't figure was that Democrats would respond just as ruthlessly, California and Virginia in particular," Hunt said.

Supreme Court Shares the Blame

Carville expanded the blame beyond Trump, pointing an accusatory finger at the Supreme Court for enabling the redistricting free-for-all. "Well, you got to blame the Supreme Court, too," Carville stated. "The great American institution called the Supreme Court said, 'Well OK, there's no equal protection. There's no anything. The legislature can do what they want.'"

The longtime Democratic operative didn't hold back in his criticism of the nation's highest court, calling it "corrupt" and lacking proper ethical oversight. "The court has become so disreputable, so unpopular, and look at the polls," Carville said. "That's how bad it's become."

The Cynical Game of Political Chess

Both strategists painted a picture of a political system trapped in a destructive cycle where neither party feels safe enough to "unilaterally disarm" from gerrymandering tactics. Hunt warned about the long-term consequences of this approach: "When you let politicians choose their voters rather than voters choose their politicians, you create politicians who have very little incentive to govern or compromise."

The podcast hosts pointed to examples across the political spectrum, noting that while Virginia's potential 10-1 split favors Democrats, North Carolina's gerrymandered districts could give Republicans an 11-3 advantage despite being described as a "purple, slightly red state."

The Republican National Committee isn't taking the Virginia redistricting quietly. RNC national press secretary Kiersten Pels condemned the move as "an unconstitutional partisan power grab designed to disenfranchise millions of voters and tilt the playing field."

Pels specifically called out Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger, accusing her of breaking promises to Virginians by advancing what Republicans characterize as a rigged system. The RNC has vowed to continue fighting the redistricting plan in court.

A System in Crisis

What emerges from Carville and Hunt's analysis is a picture of American democracy caught in a destructive spiral, where both parties feel compelled to engage in increasingly aggressive gerrymandering tactics. While they place primary responsibility on Trump for starting this "fiasco," they acknowledge that the current system incentivizes political cynicism over fair representation.

The Virginia redistricting vote represents more than just a tactical victory for Democrats—it's a symptom of a deeper crisis in how America draws its electoral maps and, by extension, how it governs itself.
